About Cynthia McLean

Cynthia McLean Cynthia McLean is a self-taught painter, metal sculptor, jeweller and fabric designer from Trinidad & Tobago. She holds a diploma in Interior Decorating. Having always had a passion for art, she attended extra mural classes with the late M.P. Alladin, the Art Society (San Fernando) and Vera Baney.

In 1984 Art Creators Gallery held a solo exhibition of her copper sculptures. For many years she successfully produced works of the highest calibre in this medium. After taking this medium as far as possible (even to the point of assembling the three metals-copper, brass and aluminium- on to painted canvas), she has taken now to paint and brush. Her work can be found in private collections both in Trinidad and abroad, churches, as well as The Central Bank collection and The National Museum of Trinidad. Cynthia has held three solo exhibitions with Horizons Art Gallery.

Cynthia McLean's earlier works have been three-dimensional; copper, brass and aluminium. Her recent works in oil and acrylic are a combination of her sculptural ability along with a freedom of expression using vibrant colour.

This way of painting allows her to respond directly from her deepest senses and emotions. It relies on intuitive, spontaneous feeling. To experience colour in this way gives her an expressive outlet and a release from observable reality.

She has challenged herself to bring something fresh, unexpected and exciting to her artwork. She uses whatever tools and techniques she feels best suited to represent the colour, rhythm, mood and form of the subject she most wants viewers to see and feel. Old houses are her favourite subjects as these can be seen throughout the whole landscape of this beautiful island from the hills of Port-of-Spain to the seascape of Mayaro.
